Who we are: Heather & John Altman, & Cheryl Jarvis

Heather has been rescuing cats and placing them in loving homes for about 7 years. In December of 2001 Heather with her husband John (designing the website),  together with her friend Cheryl Jarvis of Butler, decided to create Kats-n-Kittens Adoption & Rescue.
Our non-profit status was approved in January of 2004. We average about 90+ cats at any given time for which we use nearly 1200 pounds of clumping litter, 250 pounds of dry food, and 40 cases of canned food per month. Since we are a no-kill shelter we have limited space, funds, and time. We can only care for so many and accept cats on a space available basis. Our organization has vet bills, medication needs, shots/worming, and spay/neuter costs which are partially met by our many yearly fund-raisers. During our fund-raising activities we try to educate the public about the importance of having their pets spayed and neutered. We also provide information about low-cost spay and neuters.  Cheryl has been helping by collecting funds from her animal loving friends in Butler to help cover the costs of spaying and neutering the stray/abandoned cats in the Butler area, but this is a small percentage of the total spay/neuters that Kats-n-Kittens has done. Kats-n-Kittens averages 16 spay/neuters per month from surrounding areas. Cheryl also helps with the printing of our brochures, business cards and advertising needs. John and Heather have moved away from Butler and  so the main part of the shelter is  now located in Lucas. Heather and John have the occasional  help of April Kenison, Kathleen Schaeffer, and Megan Bailey to get 90+ cats  scooped, fed and loved twice daily and if needed medicated.  Ivy Walters & Heather still assist Cheryl in trapping the growing population of strays and having them spayed/neutered in the Butler area.  Feral cats are fixed and released or placed on approved farms.  Deirdre Brown feeds and monitors our local feral colonies.  Deirdre has supported us and championed our cause. She is an important and appreciated part of Kats-n-Kittens. Cats that are not feral or were obviously abandoned that will make good pets are fixed and kept until placed in good homes. We rescue strays from the surrounding area that we see while driving, from owners who can no longer keep them, or concerned people that find cats and call us.
Special thanks goes to Dr. John Shuler DVM of Horizon Animal Hospital in Galion Ohio, Dr. Betty Reed for all her assistance, Dr. Robert Snyder DVM of Clear Fork Veterinary Hospital in Bellville, Ohio, the Wyandot Humane Society in Upper Sandusky for reasonable spay/neuter and to Heather's parents for emotional support and floor tile :) . Cheryl would like to acknowledge the many Butler neighborhood kids who help her care for the cats she fosters. She is sincerely grateful for the assistance of Snowflake, aka Heather, Dahlia, Miranda, Mariah, Megan, Shelby, Chelsea, Bob and Siera. We extend our appreciation to the many un-named people who have been so generous, kind and helpful to Kats-n-Kittens.  Our thanks go to our family and friends who understand or at least try to understand our love of and dedication to saving the lives of our feline friends.
